Eating Disorder &
Nutrition Therapy

You might have an eating disorder if you…

  • Think about food all day long – you worry about what you can or cannot eat.
  • Are unable to take a day off from exercising.
  • Have an overwhelming fear of gaining weight.
  • You prefer eating alone and avoid social situations that involve food.
  • Are afraid that no one understands your fears about food and eating, so you keep these feelings to yourself.

Maybe your friends or family have commented about how much weight you have gained or lost and are concerned for your health and wellbeing.

You are here because you know you ‘should’ work with a nutritionist, maybe your therapist or doctor referred you here. You might feel somewhat scared, confused, annoyed, and perhaps even a bit resistant.

That is OKAY!

What is Nutrition Therapy?

Nutrition therapy as it relates to eating disorders is considered medical nutrition therapy (MNT). Please note that only dietitians are legally allowed to do MNT (not “health coaches” or other “nutritionists”).

Nutrition therapy is a process where you will explore the dynamic nature of your relationship to food, your body and your health. It involves taking a deeper look at some of the underlying forces that might be connected to or maintaining certain behaviors you have with food, your body and your health.

What to expect from nutrition therapy?

CHALLENGE MEAL SUPPORT

Our first appointment (initial intake is 90 minutes long). It involves a comprehensive assessment of your dieting, health and medical history. You tell me your story and together we make a plan to support your health and nutrition goals. You will be provided with a variety of educational tools and resources.

MEAL PLAN

Most people with active eating disorders will be given a concrete meal plan that specifies what, when, and how much to eat. Detailed ‘meal plans’ provide structure and an immediate sense of control over eating. This is an important first step in becoming an intuitive eater, as your body cues of hunger and fullness are unreliable from behaviors such as binging, purging, restriction and nutrient imbalances. The meal plan serves to recalibrate your hunger and fullness cues as well as restores and increases your metabolism, known as “metabolic recovery.”

EXERCISE BALANCE PLANS

Create a “joyful movement” plan so that moving your body feels compassionate and sustainable (not punishing or driven by compensation).

NUTRITION EDUCATION 101

Learn about the science of how the body works, metabolism, biochemistry, digestion/absorption of macro and micro -nutrients as well as the thinking about these areas that might influence your behaviors.

Learn what proportion your body needs of carbohydrates, proteins, and fats. How many calories does your body require? Learn how exercise affects how much energy your body needs?

FOOD JOURNAL
Keep a food journal in the practice better portal (you will receive an invite to join my private, confidential food journal app). I will review your food journal with you in session or prior to meeting. It’s super helpful to see patterns and evaluate key intervention points for change and nutrition restoration.
PERSONALIZED INTAKE & ASSESSMENT MEAL SUPPORT
Eat meals or snacks together in session. This is optional, but very helpful for normalizing eating, as well for decreasing social eating anxiety.
SUPPLEMENTS
Assess micronutrient imbalances and how to treat with various supplements.
SCALES & WEIGH-INS

Sometimes blind weights are needed for those who are re-feeding for nutritional rehabilitation. This provides a safety net as well as gentle accountability. My orientation is health at every size/ body positive. I prefer not to do weigh ins, and defer to the medical doctor on the team.

COORDINATED CARE

I act as your advocate and coordinate care with your medical doctor and go over lab values. There are often nutritional deficiencies with eating disorders that are treated with medical dietary interventions.

I also coordinate care with your out patient therapist and psychiatrist.

CONFIDENTIALITY

All information shared in sessions is strictly confidential. I only share information to other members on your treatment team after a release of information has been signed..

Together we work slowing to unravel from the
eating disorder belief system.

Change takes time and does not happen over-night.

I create a safe space of non-judgment and compassionate understanding.

The role of Nutrition Therapy in
Eating Disorder Recovery

“Psychotherapy is more effective if one’s body is adequately nourished to support the processing and concentration required in therapy. When working through an eating disorder, nutrition rehabilitation needs to take place before therapy in order for the individual to be able to be cognitively present.”

~ American Psychiatric Association
