What is GLP-1 Support?

These medications are often prescribed for individuals who want help managing weight or diabetes. GLP-1 Agonist Medications work by mimicking the effects of a hormone called GLP-1 that our bodies naturally produce. This hormone plays a crucial role in controlling appetite, digestion, and blood sugar levels.

GLP-1 receptor agonists work in several ways:

  • $Regulating Appetite: They help reduce cravings by influencing hunger signals in the brain.
  • $Enhancing Insulin Sensitivity: By releasing insulin from the pancreas, improving how the body responds to insulin, these medications promote better blood sugar control.
  • $Delay Stomach Emptying: A slower digestive process leads to prolonged feelings of fullness, reducing appetite and cravings.

Common side effects are as follows

  • $Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain, bloating

Serious side effects

  • $Gastroparesis, kidney disease, pancreatitis,
  • $Life threatening side effect of ileus (blockage of intestines) and FDA acknowledges risk of suicidal ideation

Questions to explore if you are unsure about taking these medications

  • $Do I have any health conditions that should be addressed more directly, rather than with a trial of weight loss? Are there screenings or preventive care measures that are being deferred for a trial of weight loss?
  • $Do I feel that short term weight loss is worth the cost and potential side effects? What about if it results in weight cycling?
  • $Do I have a history of disordered eating that might be triggered by beginning this medication, or by a loss of appetite?
  • $If I were to set weight aside, what would make the biggest difference in my health? Am I pursuing that as well?
  • $Do I need help caring for myself in the body I have now? What professionals or community could I access for help?
