Imagine your life in one year from now…
You wake up and feel proud of who you’ve become and how you didn’t think transformation like this was even possible.
Your friends and family notice your energy has shifted. You feel lighter, happier and are living life in flow instead of constant struggle.
You can keep all your favorite foods in the house without feeling guilty or anxious.
You even find a box of half-eaten Girl Scout cookies that are stale!
You can’t remember the last time you had to eat in secret.
You can’t remember the last time you stepped on the scale.
You have a daily practice of turning inward trusting your body to guide you around what and how much to eat and exercise.
You are enjoying going out more, meeting new people and taking more risks.
You’re spending your time:
Advancing in your career because you have a lot more brain space.
Going on dates, meeting new friends and lovers. More intimacy.
Exploring new hobbies, learning a new language, planning your next dream vacation.
Being more fully present with your kids and partner.
Enjoying spontaneous trips that involve delicious foods you would normally have avoided.
Going to the pool party , wearing that swimsuit without apology.
…And, the best part is…
You can’t remember the last time you felt guilty about eating.
You can’t remember the last time you heard that self-critical voice yelling at you for being a "failure."
You see food as a source of pleasure and satisfaction as opposed to something you have to constantly fight against.
Your food cravings and food noise have quited a lot. Now when cravings arise, you know exactly what's going on and how to feed your hungers in more effective ways.
The toxic ‘I feel fat and I hate you’ voice is gone and has been replaced with a kinder more compassionate voice.
Can you picture this reality in one year from now?
You’re in the right place if you can relate to any of the following:
Food controls your life. You excel in every aspect of your life but this one.
No one really knows how much time you spend thinking about food, eating, trying to control your weight.
You often find yourself thinking about what you 'should' instead of what you WANT to eat?
You're tired of all-or-nothing thinking- You're either 'on' the diet OR, ‘off’ the rails.
You follow your plan all week, only to say 'Fc*k' it! on the weekends, ending in overeating, binge eating and guilt.
You feel addicted to food or identify as an ‘emotional’ or binge eater.
You're worried about the example you're setting for your kids. You don’t want to pass down your eating issues to your kids.
You know you spend too much of your time worrying about what your body looks like. You panic at the thought of gaining (any more weight).
You’ve tried every diet under the sun- Counting macros, Noom, WW, Whole 30, surgery, injections, even “healthy” weight loss plans, and yet, nothing seems to work (long term)!
You avoid social events because you feel ashamed of what others will think when they see you.
You don’t go to the party because you know there will be too many tempting foods.
You really want to “listen” and “trust” your body with food, but don’t know how.
You just want to be able to eat like a “normal” person, to feel free around food without constant urges to use food for emotional comfort.
You know that your struggles with food and body are holding you back from living your best life.
A part of you knows what you need to do. It’s time to put yourself first for your health - mental, physical and spiritual.
Hello, I’m Karen Louise Scheuner, (she/her)
I’m a Registered Dietitian (MA, RDN), Nutrtition therapist, Certified Intuitive Eating Coash, Certified Body Trust Provider with over 20 years of experience. I help folks break free from chronic dieting, eating disorders and body image concerns.
I’m sure all of this sounds too good to be true but I was once in the same place as you are now. I was addicted to Weight Watchers for years (in my late teens/early 20’s). I even worked as a “weight loss counselor” for WW but I was secretly going through cycles of restriction, being ‘good’- following the plan followed by the inevitable binge cycle. The binges grew worse over time even though I promised to start over on Monday.
I was losing control and developing an undiagnosed eating disorder. I felt so much shame for my lack of control around food. And the worst part was that I was studying to become a dietitian, I should have had my sh*t together, but I did not.
I felt like my body was betraying me; I wanted to cut off parts of my things and butt. I wanted to shrink down and even at my lowest weight, I still felt like I wasn’t good enough. I was trapped and miserable. I know this place called, ‘diet hell.’
My weight fluctuated a lot. I gained up to my highest weight ever while working at Weight Watchers. When I gained over my goal weight (which was based on outdated BMI charts), I was given a warning that if I didn’t lose back down to my goal, I would be fired. Yes, you heard me right, fired! You can ready my full story on how WW nearly fired me, read my story here.
This was my diet bottom. It was a wake up call I needed to get professional support. I realized that I couldn’t do this alone. But I was scared because I didn’t know what else to do but diet and focus on my weight. In fact, I still wanted to lose weight!
I searched for help and found an intuitive eating coach. She was the first person to tell me about the harms of dieting and that controlling our bodies isn’t just about discipline, willpower and control. It was about restoring trust with the body and learning to work with the body, rather than constantly fighting against it. As simple as this sounds, it was truly revolutionary.
While healing did not happen overnight, it did happen! I had to let go of trying to control my body. I had to let go of my addiction to the scale. (this took a few years by the way!) I had to let go of my “dream body” and focus on what I had and how to be at peace with that.
I got curious about how my focus on weight and dieting was masking other areas of my life that I didn’t want to look at- my own insecurities, my intimacy and relationship fears, my childhood traumas, my need for perfectionism, my need to feel accepted and loved in a culture that tells women, ‘what you look like on the outside is the most important thing to focus on- your weight equals your worth.’
I finally got out of my own way and embraced a life of recovery. My weight sorted itself out and settled naturally back to its set point without trying and without dieting. This felt like a miracle. My confidence in life soared and the quality of my life increased dramatically. I had a whole new set of friends, I was going out and dancing more, I studied Buddhist psychology, meditation and yoga.
Today, I use my experience as a recovered chronic dieter to help free others in my 4 month coaching program for chronic dieting, binge eating, and emotional eating.
Praise
